Screw Gauge

A screw gauge (or micrometer screw gauge) is a precision instrument used to measure very small lengths, thicknesses, or diameters—typically accurate to 0.01 mm. It operates on the screw principle, converting small linear distances into readable values. Commonly used in physics laboratories, its purpose is to provide highly accurate measurements of wires, metal sheets, and small mechanical parts.

A Screw Gauge, also known as a Micrometer Screw Gauge, is a precision measuring instrument used to measure very small dimensions such as thickness and diameter with high accuracy. It is commonly used where measurements smaller than a vernier caliper are required.

Purpose of a Screw Gauge

The main purpose of a screw gauge is to measure extremely small objects accurately, usually up to 0.01 mm or 0.001 mm, making it ideal for precision work in science and engineering.

How to Use a Screw Gauge

  1. Place the object between the anvil and spindle.
  2. Rotate the thimble gently until the object is held firmly.
  3. Read the measurement from the main scale and circular scale.
  4. Add both readings to get the final measurement.

Where a Screw Gauge Can Be Used

  • Measuring the diameter of wires
  • Measuring the thickness of sheets
  • Measuring small mechanical parts
  • Checking manufacturing tolerances

Benefits of Using a Screw Gauge

  • Very high accuracy and precision
  • Easy to use and reliable
  • Suitable for small-scale measurements
  • Durable and long-lasting instrument
  • Reduces measurement errors
